SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - U.S.-JAPAN RELATIONS
1. LEAD STORIES: All papers on Thursday morning gave
top or front-page play to the Hatoyama administration's
announcement on Wednesday of its basic policy for
Japan's growth strategy through 2020.
2. "Prime Minister Hatoyama Must Reacknowledge
Importance of U.S." The conservative Sankei
editorialized (12/31): "During their recent summit
meeting, Prime Minister Hatoyama and Indian Prime
Minister Singh agreed on an action plan promoting
bilateral security cooperation and defense exchange
between Japan and India.... In order to check China's
growing military presence, we pin hopes on the expanded
and deepened security cooperation between Japan and
India. However, the U.S.-Japan alliance is the
principal element of the development of strategic
cooperation among the U.S., Japan, India, and
Australia. Prime Minister Hatoyama must reacknowledge
the presence and role of the U.S., and make efforts to
rebuild and strengthen the relationship of trust
between the U.S. and Japan."
