1. LEAD STORIES: Most Monday morning papers gave front-
page coverage to the questioning by prosecutors of a
DPJ lawmaker on Sunday concerning his role in a dubious
land purchase in 2004 by DPJ Secretary General Ozawa's
political fund management organization.
2. "U.S. Mediation Leads to Anticipated Release of
Opposition Leader" Claiming that U.S. mediation efforts
have prompted the Burmese junta to consider ending the
house arrest of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi just
ahead of the anticipated general election sometime next
year, the liberal Mainichi wrote (12/28): "The Obama
administration, in dealing with Myanmar, has departed
from the former Bush administration's 'pressure'-only
approach, and adopted an engagement policy centering on
dialogue. This policy shift came against the backdrop
of Myanmar's greater reliance on China in response to
the [U.S.-led] isolation policy.... In strategic terms,
China appears to be steadily 'marching' toward the
Indian Ocean through increasing aid to Myanmar. The
U.S. cannot afford to overlook China's 'growing
hegemony.' With its pro-dialogue line that replaced the
Bush administration's unilateralism apparently hitting
a snag over the Iranian nuclear development issue, the
Obama administration is being pressed to produce
tangible [diplomatic] accomplishments [in other parts
of the world]."
