1. LEAD STORIES: All Monday morning papers gave top or front-page
play to GM's plans to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy as early as today.

2. "Step toward Ethnic Reconciliation" The liberal Asahi
editorialized (6/1): "President Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka declared
victory in the civil war. The government forces tracked down the
anti-government LTTE to the northern coastal area and brought them
under control. However, we cannot welcome this development without
reservations, as many civilians were victimized by the conflict and
the humanitarian crisis continues even after the end of the war...
There is a strong mood in the international community centered on
the U.S. and European countries of waiting to see what the Sri
Lankan government will do. Their voice of support could fade if the
government fails to take sincere actions... Japan has a
responsibility to support ethnic reconciliation in Sri Lanka. There
are many areas in which Japan can contribute, including mine removal
and former soldiers' reintegration into society."
