SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - SPEAKER PELOSI'S VISIT TO CHINA
1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Friday morning included a Yomiuri
story claiming that the GOJ has decided to tighten controls on
domestic technologies and information that could be used for
military purposes, including the development of WMD, by requiring
Japanese universities, research institutions, and companies to set
up sections for controlling their technological information.
2. "Speaker Pelosi's Speech Disappoints Chinese Democratic
Activists" The conservative Sankei's correspondent report from
Beijing wrote (5/29): "There is growing disappointment among Chinese
democratic activists in U.S. House Speaker Pelosi, who is visiting
China this week. Although Pelosi was seen as an active leader of a
group critical of China's human rights record, those activists
thought her recent statements in China were not as strong as hoped
for. During her address at Tsuinghua University on Thursday, Pelosi
talked passionately about global warming but did not refer to the
improvement of China's human rights record. At her meeting with
Chinese President Hu on Wednesday, U.S.-China cooperation on global
warming was said to be the main topic... Although Speaker Pelosi
said in a press conference on Thursday that she discussed the human
rights issue with Chinese leaders, she avoided speaking about the
specific contents of the discussions. Disappointment is being voiced
by those who feel that such an attitude by the U.S. will only
encourage the Chinese government. Regarding her failure to emphasize
the human rights issue, there is a view that Pelosi held back
considering President Obama's intention to seek a new era of
U.S.-China relations."
