1. (C//NF) Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)
Nuclear Energy Policy Planning Division Deputy Director
Junichi Yokota commented on the UAE's selection of three
international consortia to bid on its upcoming nuclear plant
tender during a May 18 meeting with Emboffs (to be reported
septel). While the bulk of his information mirrored that
reported in ref, he did make one comment that may contain new
information. According to Yokota, the GOJ learned the UAE
has rank-ordered the three entities based on preference,
listing the Korean firm first, the Areva consortium second,
and the GE/Hitachi/Excelon consortium third. Yokota did not
provide the source of the information or the basis for the
ranking, and post has no way to confirm its validity, but
thought it important to note given ref information that only
two firms will be permitted to enter into formal negotiations.
