1. LEAD STORIES: All Thursday morning papers gave top or front-page
play to the confirmation on Wednesday of the first two cases of the
new strain of H1N1 influenza in Tokyo and Kawasaki, Kanagawa
Prefecture.
2. "Junta Should Immediately Stop Shameful Acts" The
business-oriented Nikkei editorialized (5/21): "... Considering the
fact that Burmese democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi was indicted
just before the term of her house arrest expires, the allegation by
democratic groups and some media outlets that the military junta
entrapped her is convincing... Her indictment appears to be aimed at
suppressing democratic groups ahead of the general election next
year... As her health condition is said to be deteriorating, the
arrest is an unacceptably shameful act from a humanitarian point of
view... There was a call within the Obama administration, which has
embarked on a policy of seeking dialogue with Iran, to explore a
softer approach to Burma. There is also a movement within the
Japanese government to relax its sanctions on Burma in the view that
the coming election will produce progress in democratization
efforts. However, the indictment of Suu Kyi has made it difficult
for the U.S. and Japan to move toward such directions."
