1. LEAD STORIES: All Monday morning papers gave top or front-page
play to the increasing number of cases of domestic infection of H1N1
influenza confirmed in Japan.
2. "Burma in Crisis" The liberal Asahi editorialized (5/16):
"Burmese democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been charged and
jailed... The military junta plans to hold a general election next
year based on the constitution it adopted last year. With Aung San
Suu Kyi deprived of her freedom, the junta's control after the
election could be strengthened and the road to democracy and
stability could become even longer... It is unwise for the junta to
think that imprisoning the democratic leader will suppress the
democratic movement and produce favorable election results. The
international community will treat any election without the
participation of the National League for Democracy led by Aung San
Suu Kyi as a farce... After the cyclone last year, large scale
relief assistance was extended and the Obama administration
expressed its intention to review its sanction-oriented diplomacy.
The prosecution of Aung San Suu Kyi is equivalent to throwing cold
water on those developments. The junta must immediately release her
and initiate dialogue toward the creation of a government that will
be recognized both at home and abroad. Japan's diplomacy will be
tested, as it has close relations with Burma."
