1. LEAD STORIES: There were no papers published on Thursday morning
due to a press holiday. Lead stories in news broadcasts on Thursday
morning included updates on the worldwide spread of H1N1 influenza.
2. "'Carrot' Should Not Be Given to North Korea for Military
Expansionism" The conservative Sankei editorialized (5/6): "North
Korea has announced a series of hard-line policies since it launched
a long-range missile... North Korea has set the development of a
nuclear missile connecting a downsized nuclear warhead and a
long-range ballistic missile by 2012 as its primary goal, and is
already moving forward at full speed to achieve that goal. This
'military expansionism' is not a 'diplomatic card,' which Pyongyang
might withdraw in the course of future negotiations with the U.S.
and the international community... It can be said that the Six-Party
Talks, which took the position that North Korea might change its
attitude if it were given a 'carrot' through dialogue, were either a
mistake or delusions of the international community... In order to
deal with North Korea's 'military expansionism,' it will be
effective for Japan and the global community to build up their
defense systems further and strengthen their sanctions on North
Korea. . . A 'carrot' should not be given for 'military
expansionism' by a military dictatorship... We should instead deal
with it using a 'stick' for the time being."
