1. Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation
Gunilla Carlsson told journalists on May 19 that Sweden is
contributing $3 million in humanitarian assistance to help
Pakistan's Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs),as follows:

- $1.3 million of its total contribution through the UNHCR,

- $1.1 million to Pakistan via the UN Central Emergency
Response Fund (CERF) to several UN humanitarian organizations,

- $625,000 to the UN Office for the Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Pakistan.

2. Carlsson stated that the "speed and scale of the internal
refugee crisis in northwest Pakistan are a cause for deep
concern." The internal refugees, currently numbering nearly
two million, need food, water, health care and shelter, as
well as protection, Carlsson opined. With humanitarian
organizations finding it difficult to safely access this
troubled region, Sweden is pleased that OCHA is organizing a
coordinated and extensive humanitarian operation, she said.
