1. (C) The Department would like to thank the leadership and
staff of the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in
Vienna for their superior performance during the successful
campaign to elect Yukiya Amano of Japan Director General of
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
2. (C) The Mission played a central role in the U.S. effort
to elect Amano, providing excellent reporting to Washington
on the status of the election and the voting positions of
other IAEA Board Members. Post's suggestions on how best to
target our lobbying campaign and demarches in over 30 IAEA
Board Member capitals were critical to our success.
3. (C) The Mission was extremely helpful in coordinating with
the Government of Japan during the election. Letters
received from Prime Minister Aso and Foreign Minister
Nakasone thanking President Obama and Secretary Clinton for
supporting Amano and stating that Japan could not have won
the election without the help of the United States are a
testament to Mission's efforts.
4. (C) The Department very much appreciates Mission's hard
work and commends its unwavering commitment to the election
campaign. Our sincerest thanks and warmest regards to the
UNVIE leadership and staff for a job truly well done.
