1. (C/REL to UN, UK) This is an action request. Per
request relayed in REF, USUN is to share with DPA U/SYG
Pascoe additional names to enlarge the pool of candidates
under consideration for the position of SRSG for Iraq.
Biographic information for these candidates has been
transmitted to USUN via email and is available from IO/UNP
upon request. Department has no information as to these
individuals' availability or interest. Names, as follow,
are: Geir Pedersen (Norway),Christopher Alexander
(Canada),Knut Vollebaek (Norway),Wegger Christian
Strommen (Norway),Pierre Kraehenbuehl (Switzerland),and
Michael Keating (UK).

2. (C/REL to UK) The interagency has identified Pedersen,
Alexander, and Vollebaek as having the best qualifications.
USUN should indicate this to Pascoe.

3. (C/REL to UK) Although Jean Arnault (France) was
identified as a strong candidate, the Department thinks
that he should continue in his current role coordinating
issues related to Pakistan for the UN.

4. (U) Please report UN reaction to these suggestions to
POC Michael Garuckis (IO/UNP),GaruckisMJ@state.sgov.gov.
