SUBJECT: CHILE PREDICTS SUCCESS FOR UN APPEALS TRIBUNAL
CANDIDATE

REF: STATE 16254

(SBU) Poloff delivered reftel demarche to MFA Multilateral
Affairs Official Ignacio Llanos on February 16. Llanos, who
recently returned to Chile after working at the Chilean
Mission to the UN for five years, said that he had spoken
with his colleagues in New York and that he "did not think
there would be a problem" with candidate Painter's selection.
However, he did not make a specific commitment about how
Chile would vote on the issue. He did note that Chile felt
that it was important to have representatives from different
judicial systems, including particularly French and Latin
American judicial systems as well as British and American
ones.
