Lead Story
1. For the first time in 13 years, the workers at
Chile's state-owned copper mine Chuquicamata voted to go on strike
and rejected a final wage and benefit offer. Work stoppage will
start on December 31. (12/29)
Chile-U.S.
2. Chile's Foreign Ministry released its publication,
"Milestones in Foreign Policy during President Michelle Bachelet's
Administration." Foreign Minister Mariano Fernandez presented the
book that covers Chile's bilateral relations with its border
countries, the region, Europe and Asia. The text notes the
relationship established with the United States and Barack Obama.
(Conservative, newspaper-of-record El Mercurio, 12/29)
Chile-Peru
3. Chile's National Prosecutor's Office ruled out Peru's
allegations about the existence of any local contacts in the
espionage case. National Prosecutor Sabas Chauan presented its
report to Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in response to a
request for cooperation submitted last week by Peruvian courts.
The report, which will be delivered by the Foreign Ministry to the
Peruvian Ambassador to Chile in the next few hours, clarified that
there is no information regarding the two names provided by Peru.
(El Mercurio, 12/29)
4. In the book "Milestones in Foreign Policy during
President Michelle Bachelet's Administration," Chile admits for the
first time a setback in its relations with Peru. (Conservative,
independent, La Tercera 12/29)
Air Safety Measures
5. As a result of the safety measures being enforced
globally, Santiago's International Airport released new safety
regulations for passengers, especially those bound for the United
States. Local authorities are recommending passengers to arrive at
the terminal three hours in advance of their flights. (La Tercera,
12/29)
