1. (C) Poloff delivered reftel demarche to Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Multilateral Affairs Officers Felix Ulloa and
Egriselda Gonzalez on August 11. Gonzalez said the MFA has
not yet decided its vote for UNESCO Director General, but
that it is leaning toward support for the Ecuadoran
candidate, with whom Foreign Minister Hugo Martinez recently
met.

2. (C) Gonzalez mentioned that the Egyptian ambassador
(resident in Guatemala) recently came to El Salvador to drum
up support for Egyptian candidate, Farouk Hosni. According
to Gonzalez, the GOES is aware of Hosni,s controversial
comments regarding Israel, but she did not say whether the
GOES would support him in the later voting rounds.
