SECRETARY CLINTON
1. This in an action cable. Please see paragraph four.
2. On Wednesday, January 21, the office of Salvadoran Foreign
Minister Marisol Argueta de Barillas contacted the embassy
and requested a meeting with Secretary Clinton on the morning
of Tuesday, January 27. Minister Argueta will be in
Washington for Holocaust commemorative ceremonies on January
26-27.
3. Comment: We urge the Department to accept the meeting if
possible. This is a valuable opportunity to engage a key
ally on the eve of crucial March 15 Presidential elections,
as well as to encourage Salvadoran regional leadership on the
Merida Initiative, Pathways to Prosperity, and other U.S.
priorities in Central America. End comment.
4. Please notify embassy as soon as possible if the Secretary
will be able to take the meeting as requested.
