SUBJECT: POCS FOR MARINE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AUTHORIZATIONS IN
ITALY

Refs: A) 10/01/09 Tirpak-Preston e-mail B) State 101996

1. Per ref B, the POC for marine scientific research authorizations
in Italy is: Ms. Jean Preston, Environment, Science and Technology
Affairs Counselor (telephone: (+39) 06 4674-2691; e-mail:
prestonj@state.gov). She will be in Italy until approximately
August 2010.

2. The alternate POC is: Ms. Ebe Marzetti, Economic Specialist
(telephone: (+39) 06 4674-2471; email: marzettie@state.gov). She is
a locally-engaged member of the Embassy staff, and thus does not
have a transfer date.

3. Per ref B para 5 and ref A, Post has reviewed the Italy-specific
information to be included on http://www.state.gov/g/oes/ocns/rvc/,
and it does not require any corrections. In order to process
marine scientific research authorizations, the Italian Foreign
Ministry (MFA) must receive the complete application, under cover of
a diplomatic note from the Embassy, at least 90 days prior to the
start of the research.

4. Per ref B para 4: the Italian MFA requires that the research
results be passed directly to interested domestic entities. (The
MFA itself does not require a copy of the results, and does not
distribute the cruise reports to domestic agencies.) Ideally,
researchers should provide copies of the cruise reports directly to
the Italian contacts (e.g., port authorities, on-board observers)
with whom they dealt during the research cruise. Post also is
willing to pass on to interested Italian agencies cruise reports
forwarded to Post by OES/OA, if the reports are accompanied by the
contact information (at a minimum, name, mailing address and phone
number) for the individuals whom the researchers believe should
receive them.
