1. (U) Embassy Rome delivered the diplomatic note demarche
concerning the U.S. candidacy for the International Maritime
Organization Council. The demarche was submitted to Roberto
Pietrosanto, Coordinator of Office I, Directorate General for
Economic and Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
who is the primary MFA contact for IMO affairs. Italy responded Oct.
8 via diplomatic note.
2. (SBU) Unofficial translation of Italian diplomatic note:
" Courtesy Opening.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign refers to Note No. 09-00797 of
September 28, 2009, which requests Italian support for the U.S.
candidacy in IMO's category A at elections to be held in London from
November 23 to December 4 during work of the XXVI session of the IMO
General Assembly.
Concerning this matter the Italian Foreign Ministry has the honor to
communicate that Italy will support the U.S. candidacy and is hoping
for U.S. support for Italy's candidacy in the same category.
