CASE OF GUANTANAMO BAY DETAINEE BOUMEDIENE
Classified By: POL MC Kathleen H. Allegrone for reasons 1.4 (B & D).
1. (S/NF) In the course of a conversation on other issues,
French Presidency Advisor for the Americas Damien Loras
mentioned to pol/mc France's continuing desire to try to be
helpful with Guantanamo detainees. Specifically, he said
France has become aware that Algerian Guantanamo Bay detainee
Lakhdar Boumediene may have an interest in being settled in
France and said that France was reviewing that possibility.
He stressed that there are many issues to address,
particularly with the Ministry of Interior.
2. (S/NF) Comment: News that the French are willing to
review Boumediene's case is a welcome development, but we
stress that this does not yet constitute a commitment to
accept him into French custody. End Comment.
