1. (C) On March 18, Charge delivered reftel demarche to Mr.
Vincent Zakane, Chief of Staff at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs. Zakane said he completely agreed with the USG
position and analysis of the situation. He offered that,
from the start, Burkina Faso had supported and continues to
support the original African Union position.
2. (C) Concerning the request that President Compaore take a
leadership role and leverage Burkina Faso's upcoming
Chairmanship of AU PSC to reaffirm previous statements,
Zakane reminded us that it was the President's prerogative to
do so or not, but promised to pass on the USG request.
Zakane said he would follow up with any additional
information he might obtain.
