SUBJECT: M/S POLARIS: NORWEGIANS DENY JURISDICTION

REF: STATE 14029

(SBU) On February 17 we delivered reftel points to GON Legal
Advisors Martin Sorby and Kjell Kristian Egge. Egge stated
that, given the M/S Polaris is flagged in the Marshall
Islands, Norway did not have either "flag state" or primary
jurisdiction in this piracy case. Accordingly, he deemed it
inappropriate for the GON to intervene and engage in the
prosecution of the captured pirates. Post will report on any
additional developments.
