E.O. 12958: DECL: 03/04/2014
TAGS: PREL PGOV IS MR
SUBJECT: ISRAELI AMBASSADOR TO LEAVE "ON EXTENDED VACATION"
REF: NOUAKCHOTT 167
Classified By: Charge d'Affaires Dennis Hankins for reasons 1.4 (b and
d)
(C) Israeli Ambassador Miki Arbel told Charge March 5 that
Israel had decided on a low key response to Mauritanian
demands for a "reciprocal" Israeli response to the
Mauritanian "freeze" of bilateral relations. The Ambassador
and his wife will leave Nouakchott on Friday or Saturday
(depending on flight availability) for "an extended
vacation." For now, the Mission's Security/Management
officer (the only other permanently assigned Israeli official
in Nouakchott) and perhaps some other TDY security staff will
stay in Nouakchott and the Embassy will remain technically
open. Arbel said, "we really don't know what we will do
later."
