1. (U) On April 8, the Investigative Commission referred the case of
former Prime Minister Hama Amadou to the High Court of Justice
(HCJ). In doing so, the Commission also stated that Amadou
embezzled 39 million CFA instead of the 100 million announced in the
lower court's and the National Assembly's preliminary investigation
(ref c). On April 14, Hamas' lawyers requested his provisional
release from the High Court of Justice, which will hear the case on
April 23.
2. (U) On April 10, Minister of Justice Dagra Mamadou held a press
conference on Hama Amadou's health. Mamadou stated that on the
morning of April 10, President Tandja ordered that Amadou be
evacuated by presidential plane to the Royal Army Hospital in
Morocco. Mamadou confirmed that Amadou promptly rejected this
offer. Amadou's personal doctor and lawyers continue to request
that Amadou be transferred to the American Hospital near Paris.
