TERRORISM/PAKISTAN
--------------
1. "TERROR AND INSENSITIVITY," editorial in June 1
centrist Hindi daily, NAVBHARAT TIMES: "The British and
Chinese objections on India's request to put Masood
Azhar and Azam Cheema on the UNSC terror list are
beyond understanding. The Pakistan government's double
standards on terrorism have become a threat to
Pakistan's own existence today, but what is forcing
Britain to be apathetic to the world's most dangerous
terrorists?"
2. "CAN ONE EXPECT JUSTICE FROM PAKISTAN?" editorial in
June 3 right-of-center Gujarati daily, MUMBAI
SAMACHAR: "The release of Hafiz Saeed, the alleged
mastermind of the 11/26 Mumbai terrorist attacks, by a
Pakistani court smacks of Pakistan's insincerity in
bringing the culprits to justice. Can we expect justice
from a nation (Pakistan) that in the first place aids
and abets terrorism? Why do we have to rely on nations
like America in the fight against terrorism? The need
of the hour is a strong political will to crush this
menace."
3. "PAKISTAN'S MISCHIEF," editorial in June 3 centrist
Marathi daily, LOKMAT: "Pakistan's lack of commitment
in the war against terror was once again underlined
after the release of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafeez
Mohd Saeed, one of the terrorist minds behind the
Mumbai terror attacks. Pakistan makes a few token
gestures merely to bow to global pressure and then
backs out at an opportune moment. India has to devise
ways to stop this diplomatic tomfoolery."
--------------
U.S. ECONOMY
--------------
4. "GENERAL MOTOR'S BANKRUPTCY: AMERICAN RECESSION'S
HELPLESSNESS?" editorial in June 3 centrist Gujarati
daily, GUJARATMITRA: "Despite President Obama's
initiatives aimed at saving GM, the impression is that
these efforts have scripted the obituary for the
world's auto giant for now. The entire world is
watching America's economy with suspicion as its
policies are not only hurting domestic interests but
are also proving detrimental to other rising
economies. We need to be cautious of America's
approach."
5. "FALL OF AMERICAN PRIDE," editorial in June 3 CPI
(M) Bengali Organ GANASHAKTI: "General Motors has
crumbled like a pack of cards. This is a bad omen for
the U.S. economy. If other companies also go bankrupt
NEW DELHI 00001132 002 OF 002
like this, the backbone of American capitalism will
crash."
