U.S. WTO RAW SUGAR TARIFF RATE QUOTA

1. Econoff spoke on April 15 with Leonardo de Leon, President
of ALUR (a state-owned sugar producer),regarding reftel
request to obtain information on how much sugar Uruguay plans
to export to the U.S. under the WTO sugar tariff rate quota
(TRQ).
2. De Leon indicated that Uruguay currently has no plan to
use any of its 2009 sugar TRQ, but said that they will
re-analyze the possibility during the next week to determine
whether they wish to reconsider. Embassy will provide any
follow-up from ALUR should they advise Embassy of an intent
to use all or part of their FY 2009 sugar TRQ.
