AT THE UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
REF: STATE 27376
(SBU) Poloff stressed with Armando Vivanco Castellanos, the
Foreign Ministry's Deputy Director General for Human Rights
and Democracy, March 24 the importance the U.S. attached to
Mexico's voting against the "Defamation of Religion"
resolution in the upcoming vote at the UN Human Rights
Council in Geneva. Recalling that Mexico abstained on a
similar resolution last year, Vivanco agreed with the concept
of not conferring to religions rights that are reserved for
individuals and told Poloff that the Government of Mexico was
reviewing its stance on the subject.
