TAGS: PGOV PREL PHUM EUN MR UK
SUBJECT: MAURITANIA: UK AGREES WITH USG POSITION
REF: STATE 13962
Classified By: Political Counselor Richard Mills, reasons 1.4 (b/d).
(C) Foreign Office Mauritania Desk Officer Emily Summers said
on February 18 that the UK agrees with the USG's position on
Mauritania, per reftel talking points. She said the UK
normally stays "in line with the French" on Mauritania and
that HMG was generally encouraged that the "international
community agreed on the way forward on Mauritania." As an
aside, she mentioned that HMG continues to plan to open a
one-person post in Mauritania and has begun formal
discussions with the European Commission about space in its
facilities. Summers anticipates HMG's official will arrive
in Nouakchott sometime in autumn 2009. Comment: HMG tends to
follow France's lead in the EU on Mauritania, and we expect
HMG will support France while the GOF does any necessary
heavily lifting in the EU. End comment.
