NOMINATION AT UN

REF: SECSTATE 16254

Pol-Econ Officer shared Judge Mark Painter's qualifications
for the UN Appellate Tribunal with Portuguese MFA
International Relations Officer Ana Gomes and requested that
Portugal consider supporting Painter's candidacy, per reftel.
Gomes was not familiar with the election, but agreed to
check with the Portuguese mission in New York to see whether
it had a recommendation for the Portuguese MFA. Gomes agreed
to contact us to let us know whether Portugal will support
Judge Painter.
