SUBJECT: GABON: SUPPORTIVE OF U.S. FOOD SECURITY OBJECTIVES
REF: 09 SECSTATE 00107298
On November 12, Ministry of the Economy Director of
Consumption and Nourishment Madame Pepecy Ogouliguende told
poloff that Gabon should have no problem supporting U.S.
efforts on food security in the U.N. General Assembly and in
other fora. Similarly, Director General for the Americas
Desk Bika Bisso told poloff on November 2 that Gabon's
interest in food security dovetails with U.S. goals. Both
Ogouliguende and Bisso also noted that Gabon's practice of
importing most of its food means that price fluctuations and
availability have severe negative impacts on the majority of
Gabonese. Ogouliguende asked that the U.S. and other G8
nations investigate ways to stabilize international food
prices in Africa. Copies of the letter from Secretary
Clinton (reftel) were sent to the Minister of Foreign Affairs
and the Minister of Economy. Ogouliguende and Bisso also
received copies.
