1. (U) In response to reftel request for export estimates from the
DRC under the U.S. WTO sugar tariff rate quota, the Chiefs of Staff
to the DRC Ministers of Agriculture and Trade said the DRC does
not/not plan to export any quantity of sugar to the U.S. during the
remainder of fiscal year (FY) 2009. The Congolese Chamber of
Commerce and the CEO of La Sucriere de Kwilu-Ngongo, a major DRC
sugar producer, both confirmed that sugar is exported only to the EU
and to the Republic of Congo. The Ministries have not yet provided
such information in writing as requested, and post will relay any
further response from the DRC.
