SUBJECT: Vietnam Likely to Support Defamation of Religion Resolution

REF: STATE 122637; DECEMBER 4 E-MAIL MARCHANT-DRL/IRF

(SBU)Poloff delivered Ref. A points to MFA International
Organizations Human Rights Section Desk Officer Nguyen Cam Linh
December 4. Linh said she would relay our position to senior MFA
officials, but offered Vietnam "likely" would continue to support
such resolutions to promote religious freedom globally. Poloff
stressed that the "Defamation of Religion" concept has been used as
an excuse to arrest and persecute minority groups. Linh said she
respected the U.S. position, but Vietnam must listen to its small
minority Muslim population that opposes any defamation of its
religion.
