1. Embassy Gaborone delivered the message in Ref A to the
Government of Botswana via diplomatic note on April 16.
Pol/Econ Chief also discussed the USG's candidacy for the UN
Human Rights Council with Mr. Nkoloi Nkoloi, Director for
Europe and the Americas at the Botswana Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, on April 15. Nkoloi indicated that the GOB was
pleased that the USG had decided to rejoin the Council.
Poloff told him that in a recent meeting at the UN (ref B),
Botswana's PermRep Ambassador Ntwaagae had assured Ambassador
Rice that we could count on Botswana's support during the
Human Rights Council vote. Poloffs will circulate copies of
the Human Rights Pledge document (provided via email from
AF/S) to relevant contacts in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and to local human rights organizations.
