1. The information below is in response to reftel questions
on the candidacy of Mary Faherty for the UN appeals tribunal:
Q: Judicial expertise, particularly any experience in the
area of administrative and employment law.
A: Candidate received her LLB in 1984. Prior to being
appointed to the Mahon Tribunal, candidate worked on the
Employment Appeals Tribunal in Dublin.
Q: Reputation among the judiciary and in the country, and in
particular views on impartiality and judicial bearing.
A: Candidate,s appointment to the Mahon Tribunal indicates a
positive reputation among the judiciary. Additionally, her
work within the high-profile case has been well-received by
the general population. Faherty was a 2006 recipient of the
NUI Galway Award for Law, Public Service, and Government.
Q: Within the country,s judicial structure, at what level
did this candidate serve: municipal/local, state/provincial,
federal/national.
A: Faherty is a Circuit Court Judge. She has served in a
state/provincial and federal/national capacity.
Q: Does the government have any views concerning the general
fitness of a candidate to serve on the UNDT/UNAT?
A: The government has not provided any views concerning the
general fitness of the candidate to serve on the UNDT/UNAT
but post has no reason to believe any negative views exist.
Q: Is there any disqualifying information that you are aware
of with respect to this candidate (e.g. corruption,
impropriety, politically-influenced decision-making)?
A: We are not aware of any disqualifying information on the
candidate.
Q: Please provide any views on how the host nation views
other candidates for the UNDT and UNAT positions. We note to
posts that a demarche request for U.S. candidate, Judge Mark
P. Painter, for the UN Appeals Tribunal is being sent via
