1. (SBU) Post delivered diplomatic notes to the Governments
of Sri Lanka and the Maldives on April 16 informing them of
the candidacy of the United States for election to the United
Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2009-2012, as well
as a copy of the United States Human Rights Commitments and
Pledges. Ambassador previously conveyed reftel points
concerning the U.S. candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council
to Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona. DCM
contacted Maldivian Foreign Minister Ahmed Shaheed (ref C).
2. (U) Post notes that Maldives has also announced its
candidacy for election to the UNHRC for the term 2009-2012.
Foreign Minister Shaheed travelled to Geneva on Thursday
April 9 and, during a meeting with UN High Commissioner for
Human Rights Navi Pillay, announced the Maldives' candidacy
for election to the UNHRC.
