1. (SBU) Ambassador conveyed reftel points concerning the
U.S. candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council to Sri Lankan
Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona. DCM contacted Maldivian
Foreign Minister Ahmed Shaheed.
2. (SBU) Foreign Secretary Kohona responded as follows: "We
also believe that the U.S. should work with the HRC. The
U.S., acting objectively, would wield significant influence
in this body."
3. (SBU) Foreign Minister Shaheed replied, "We will be
delighted to support the U.S. candidacy. Quite frankly, I
was greatly dismayed when the U.S. did not seek election to
the Council when it was first formed because I believe the
Council will be more credible with the U.S. as a member. The
Maldives wishes the U.S. success in its candidacy."
