HUMAN RIGHTS RESOLUTION
Classified By: AMBASSADOR PATRICIA A. BUTENIS. REASONS: 1.4 (B, D)
1. (C) On November 16, Vice President Ahmed Shaheed assured
Ambassador of the support of the government of the Maldives
(GOM) and of the Maldives intention to oppose the
&no-action8 motion on the human rights resolution on Iran.
Shaheed instructed their mission in New York not to
participate in the vote if the resolution wording was the
same as last year. Shaheed explained that the Maldives
possibly would vote &yes," if the resolution was worded only
on the human rights on Iran. If the resolution implied
criticism of Sharia law similar to last year's resolution,
however, the Maldives would not be in a position to give its
support. Shaheed would closely study the resolution text and
give his final decision to Ambassador in the next few days.
2. (C) Ambassador also stressed to Shaheed the importance of
the GOM's support on the resolutions on Burma and North Korea.
