1. (SBU) The following is the latest SITREP covering
Australia's response to the H1N1 outbreak.
2. (SBU) Government Response: Australian pandemic response
posture has not changed since June 17. Australia reached 100
deaths related to H1N1 infection on August 12. Media reports
claimed on 11 August that an Adelaide vaccine company,
Vaxine, expects to report final effectiveness results of a
pandemic H1N1 vaccine by mid-October. There were no details
on the origin of the vaccine. Australian company Biota
announced successful trials had been completed in Asia of a
new anti-viral, laninamivir, and that the drug - which
supposedly requires only a single dose - was close to
reaching the Australian market. Aboriginal and Torres
Straits Islanders make up nearly 13 percent of both deaths
and hospitalizations related to H1N1 in Australia, although
they are only three percent of the population.
3. (SBU) Case Count: Australia has confirmed a total of
28,307 pandemic H1N1 (2009) influenza cases since the first
detenction in Australia. There have been 3371
hospitalizations and 100 deaths attributed to the pandemic.
4. (SBU) Post Actions: Post continues to monitor the H1N1
situation in Australia.
5. (SBU) Consular Issues: As of August 12, there are no
reported consular issues involving H1N1.
