WORKSHOP ON BIOLOGICAL THREAT REDUCTION

1. (U) Summary: Australia will attend and participate in
US-Philippines ARF Workshop on Biological Threat Protection.

2. (U) On May 15, Henry Fox, Director of the Strategic Policy
Section, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
(DFAT),told poloff that he had received and replied to a
faxed invitation from the Assistant Secretary of the
Philippines' Foreign Ministry, Eduardo Maglaya to take part
in the June ARF Workshop on Biological Threat Reduction
taking place in Manila. Australia has already arranged for a
speaker to discuss International Biological Threats in the
opening session of the workshop; however, finding a speaker
for the Threat Reduction and Mitigation session is proving
more difficult.
3. (U) Poloff also notified the Philippine Embassy in
Canberra, through its first secretary, Uriel Garibay, that
the U.S. Embassy in Canberra is ready to help him bring the
Australians to the Workshop.
