1. (SBU) PolOff delivered reftel demarches to the MFA
Asia/Pacific Department's Deputy Director General Laszlo Kuti
on June 30. Kuti commented that the information was in line
with Hungary's position vis-a-vis North Korea. He stated
that Hungary fully supported the EU's statement on the issue
as well. Kuti underscored the importance of the UN
resolution, noting that Russia's and China's support for the
resolution sent an important signal from the international
community.
2. (SBU) Kuti also mentioned that Hungary is in the process
of moving their diplomatic representation to North Korea from
Beijing, China to Seoul, South Korea, making better use of
their Korean experts in the region. While Hungary has no
diplomatic representation in Pyongyang, and very little
trade, Kuti mentioned that the Hungarian Baptist Aid NGO has
been working in North Korea for the past ten years to
provided humanitarian assistance.
3. (SBU) Refel demarche on implementation of UNSCR 1874
financial provisions and information on U.S. advisory on
North Korea was also delivered to Ministry of Finance
International Directorate Head of Unit Krisztina Kovacs.
Kovacs indicated that the relevant information on UNSCR 1874
was transmitted to Hungary's Financial Supervisory Authority
and Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).
