E.O. 12958: DECL: 03/17/2029
TAGS: PREL EU SY HU
SUBJECT: DEMARCHE DELIVERED: U.S. ENGAGEMENT WITH SYRIA

REF: SECSTATE 20919

Classified By: PolOff Ryan Leong, reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).

(C) On March 12, 2009, PolOff delivered reftel demarche to
GoH Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) U.S. desk officers
Andras Szorenyi and David Horvath. Szorenyi and Horvath had
no immediate response to U.S. requests for a coordinated
approach to the Syrian government (SARG) but said their
future actions would likely be in line with other major EU
players. Furthermore, Szorenyi said that the MFA Department
for Africa and the Middle East was closely following the
recent high-level contact between Department and SARG
officials and appreciated a clarification on what exactly the
current U.S. goals were with this engagement. Szorenyi and
Horvath planned to forward reftel talking points to Ferenc
Csillag, Deputy Head of the Department for Africa and the
Middle East.
