SUBJECT: BELGIUM: H1N1: FOURTEENTH CASE REPORTED

REF: BRUSSELS 776

1. Belgian health authorities announced via a press release
late on June 5 that a fourteenth positive case of H1N1 had
occurred in the Kingdom: a young man from the Flemish Brabant
region who had fallen ill sometime during the night of June 2
to June 3, following his return that day from a trip to the
United States. The man had spent time in Orlando, Florida,
and returned to Belgium on a New York-Brussels flight.

2. The man called his doctor on June 4; the doctor, after
noting the man's flu symptoms and discussing the case with
the health inspector, had a test performed. On June 5, the
test came back positive, and the man was transferred to
Brussels' Saint Pierre hospital. His case was not believed
to be severe.

3. The man had not left his house following his return from
the United States, and had close contact with seven persons.
Those seven are being treated with antivirals and have been
asked to avoid contact with others and to monitor their
health. Health authorities have asked for a list of
passengers from the New York to Brussels, and indicated they
would contact passengers who may have come into contact with
the sick man.
