SUBJECT: BELGIUM: DEMARCHE TO EU MEMBERS ON SANCTIONS POLICY

REF: SECSTATE 112644

Classified By: Acting Political Economic Counselor Robert Kiene

(C) Poloffs delivered reftel demarche to Counselor Theodora
Gentzis who covers Belarus in the MFA's European Union
Relations Directorate. Gentzis said the European Union would
renew sanctions on Belarus through October 2010, with
appropriate suspensions of application at the next GAERC.
She said Belgium was a strong proponent of the sanctions, and
sending a clear signal to Belarus that further reform in the
democratic and economic arenas is needed.
