SUBJECT: OSC SERVICES ARE ESSENTIAL TO EMBASSY BRATISLAVA


1. Post appreciates translation services provided by the Open
Source Center (OSC) in Vienna. In addition to the selected
materials OSC translates each work day, Post regularly
requests translation of longer articles of particular policy
concern. We understand that funds for tranlsation from Czech
and Slovak have been cut significantly and are concerned that
OSC will no longer be able to fulfill our translation needs
in future.


2. Embassy Bratislava particularly appreciates this service
as some of the reporting officers in our mission were not
able to receive full language instruction courses before
arriving at post due to the needs of the Department, and are
expected to understand the nuances of less traditional
material than is typically covered in the standard OSC
translations. Thus far, OSC Vienna has done an excellent job
of translating important analytical pieces for us upon
request, and we would very much appreciate them being able to
continue this service in the future.
