1. (C) Embassy Beijing warmly thanks the participants in the
China Watchers Conference, held in Beijing May 7-9. The new
conference brought together participants from 17 different
posts and commands, including multiple agencies and members
of the analyst community. Participants exchanged views on
China's foreign policy initiatives in Asia and around the
world, and on the impact of China's domestic situation on its
foreign policy. Participants also met with senior Chinese
academics, think tankers, and MFA officials to hear
first-hand PRC perspectives on China's regional and global
strategy.
2. (SBU) With the positive response and participation in the
conference, we are looking to make this an annual event.
Addressee posts will receive invitations to attend, and are
encouraged to include this travel in spring 2010 when drawing
up travel plans and budgets for the next fiscal year. In the
meantime, expressions of interest or recommendations for next
year's conference can be sent to Eric Barboriak at
BarboriakEM@state.gov.
