1. (U) On April 23, Embassy received a Note Verbale from the D1
Directorate of UN and International Organizations and Conferences
at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) expressing its
support for the U.S. candidacy to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC)
for the 2009-2012 term. Greece "warmly welcomes the renewed
commitment of the United States to the Human Rights Council of the
United Nations." It also noted that six years ago, following the
decision of the United States to submit its candidacy for the
Executive Board of UNESCO, Greece withdrew its candidacy to
facilitate the U.S. election.
