SUBJECT: GREECE: POINTS DELIVERED ON PROSECUTION OF
SUSPECTED PIRATES
REF: STATE 14029
Per reftel, Poloff told Greek MFA D1 Directorate (UN and
International Organizations Affairs) Counselor Dimitrios
Papandreou February 17 that our current intent is to transfer
suspected pirates captured February 12 to Kenya for
prosecution, but if Greece and/or other "victim states"
wished to pursue prosecution, we would endeavor to
facilitate. Papandreou expressed thanks for the information
and said he would disseminate it within the Greek government.
He predicted it would be several days at least before Greece
would be able to provide any official reaction. Post will
remain in touch with Papandreou and will forward any further
Greek response to Washington when we receive it.
