1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the October 8-15, 2009, four security officials were
injured due to PKK IED and a land mine on October 9 and 13 in the
Bitlis and Sirnak provinces. The total number of security force
casualties for the year through October 15, was 53 killed and 90
injured.
3. (U) During the same period, one PKK member was killed in clashes
in the Sirnak province on October 15, and bodies of two more PKK
members, reportedly executed by the terrorist organization, were
found in the Bingol province on October 8. One PKK member was
captured in the Sirnak province on October 10 and nine surrendered,
including one in Bitlis, eight in Sirnak provinces on October 9, 14
and 15. According to official TGS website figures, through the
second week of October the number of PKK militants killed this year
was 43, the number of those captured was 60, and the number of those
who surrendered was 107.
4. (U) During the reporting period no civilian was killed or
injured. The total number of civilian casualties for the year
through the end of the second week of October, was 15 killed and 24
wounded.
