1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the September 8-15, 2009, ten security officials were
killed and ten were injured. Out of ten who were kill, eight died
in clashes with the PKK in Siirt and Hakkari provinces on September
8, and two in a PKK landmine explosion in the Van province on
September 9. Out of ten who were injured, four were hurt in clashes
with the PKK in Siirt and Sirnak provinces on September 8 and 13 and
six in a PKK landmine explosion in the Van province on September 9.
The total number of security force casualties for the year through
September 15, was 51 killed and 83 injured.
3. (U) During the same period, three PKK militants were killed in
clashes in the Hakkari province on September 9 and 10. Two PKK
militants were captured in the Hakkari province on September 9 and
12. Five PKK militants surrendered in the Sirnak and Bingol
provinces on September 9 and 13. According to official TGS website
figures, through the second week of September the number of PKK
militants killed and injured this year was 39, the number of those
captured was 46, and the number of those who surrendered was 92.
4. (U) During the reporting period one civilian was killed and
another was injured when they stepped on a PKK landmine in the
Diyarbakir province on September 11. The total number of civilian
casualties for the year through the end of the second week of
September, was 12 killed and 23 wounded.
