SUBJECT: JORDAN: CONSTRUCTIVE OUTCOME FROM THE GOLDSTONE
REPORT
REF: STATE 98567
Classified By: Ambassador R. Stephen Beecroft
for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).
(C) Poloff delivered reftel demarche on September 28 to Samer
Naber, Americas Bureau Chief at the MFA. Naber characterized
Goldstone as "a man of integrity" whose "quite serious"
report demands a response. Naber said that the report is
still being digested by the Jordanian government. As
official response to the report is being worked out in the
interagency process, Naber welcomed our points as valuable
contributions to the debate. He noted Jordan's membership in
the International Criminal Court, and hinted that the
government was exploring the legal implications of the report
in that context. The Embassy will continue to report on this
issue as events warrant.
