- DEMARCHE DELIVERED
REF: A. SECSTATE 35767
B. ABUJA 525
1. (SBU) Post delivered Ref. A demarche to E. Josakweker,
Director of the African Union Division of the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs. Josakweker referred to the March 20
statement issued by the MFA (Ref. B) in which the GON
strongly condemned the coup and affirmed that it will not
recognize Rajoelina's government. He had nothing substantive
to add to the March 20 statement. Post notes that despite
Nigeria's own recent history of severely flawed elections,
including the 2007 general elections, the GON continues to be
strongly supportive of democracy and constitutional rule on
the African continent, both bilaterally and via ECOWAS and
the AU.
2. (U) This cable was coordinated with Consulate Lagos.
