We delivered reftel points to Diana Mickeviciene, Head of the
MFA's Asia, Pacific, and Latin America Division, on May 6.
She said that within the EU the GOL "stands with the
hardliners" when it comes to sanctions on Burma and
dissatisfaction with Burma's upcoming referendum. She noted,
however, that the GOL will not issue its own statement
condemning Burma. The reason, she said, is "practical, not
political" -- the MFA has only two staff that cover the whole
of Asia, so it is rare that issues in Asia get priority
attention.
